Comapping: collaborative information mapping

Wallace Tait and Brian Friedlander

Web 2.0 has certainly made a significant impact on the ways we now create, manage and exchange information and knowledge. Collaboration is indeed the corner stone for real time communications within personal, academic and business arenas while using web 2.0 (Cloud) applications.

We have simply been given much more flexibility through the use of cloud computing.

Regarding Visual mapping; cloud collaboration has exponentially increased the potentials for being more effective and productive. The cloud can become a repository (Data bank) for storing and sharing much of your information and knowledge, and you also have control over who gets to access your information too. Less travelling to meet clients, your web space becomes a virtual office and classroom where you can operate, collaborate and present with ease; as long as you have web access.

There’s a recent interesting trend coming from web 2.0 visual mapping apps. They are now moving towards offering desktop versions of their apps, so desktop computing isn’t dead yet.

We were recently given access to Comapping by Michael Pliskin Director of R&D. Comapping is both a web and desktop based information management app that expresses a left to right format defined as visual mapping. The desktop application seamlessly synchronizes with the web based tool.

During the summer of 2006 Comapping was born through a joint venture between Area9 in Denmark and Lanit-Tercom in Russia. These two organizations initially developed and used Comapping as an internal organization wide communication tool. They were frustrated with limitations that traditional mind mapping software posed. Soon realizing they were not alone while facing similar limitations with incumbent mind mapping software applications; Comapping was further developed for wider commercial use.

It’s an awesome information mapping/management tool that enables you to collaborate with absolute ease, and it’s extremely fast. The developers have crafted a new and expressive category of information mapping that is independent of the Mind mapping genre. The Comap, Comapping and Comapper shall without a doubt, be definitions associated with forward thinking information management.

Using Comapping has exponentially enhanced and improved our time and project management, to the point of having more clarity that equates to monetizing other more important aspects of our consulting work. Simply put, Comapping has; and continues to transform our information management capabilities.

In our opinion Comapping has a powerful advantage over mind mapping apps, due to the left to right format and the top down logical process approach of this format. Project managers will most certainly feel comfortable with Comapping, as shall Business System managers who use the ISO 9001 standards.

The left to right format, when mapping expresses a very comfortable and logical feel to Comapping.

Asger Ottar Alstrup, CEO and Board Member of Comapping developed the unique auto-collapsing algorithm that optimizes use of often scarce computer screen real estate while mapping. The animated look to Comapping is very comfortable and pleasing to the eye. Navigation throughout a map while presenting information to colleagues and clients is one of the great strengths of Comapping.

Real time collaboration is indeed a notable strength of Comapping. You will find it easy to invite a colleague into your mind map and give them permission to read or edit your map. While collaborating on the map, you can view where your colleague is and what part of the map they are editing. You can also use a chat window to communicate during the session.

The experience of co-editing the map was fast and flawless. One of our top features of Comapping is the ability to easily publish your Comaps to you blog or web site by simply copying an embed code.

With the recent addition of the Comapping desktop application, and its strong import and export features, Comapping is a strong information mapping tool for your collaboration needs. The desktop version is a clone to the online version, enabling you to work off line when required.

Once you have created your mind map using the desktop version of Comapping you can save it to your online account and then access it through your browser. Comapping gives you lots of options if you would like to Export your mind maps to other applications.

We found the no nonsense approach to mapping information while creating, managing and exchanging relevant business information was performed with ease. The learning curve was so short; we were up and running with Comapping within 10 minutes.

Comapping is continuously being developed, therefore the user can have confidence the developers listen to the voice of the user. Expect a great future from Comapping.

The Personal, Academic and Business application of Comapping is very evident, and we encourage you to download, use and purchase this excellent information management tool. It is available in two formats; desktop and web editions. Visit www.comapping.com for more information.

Webspiration Updated

One of the first visual mapping tools that I worked with many years ago was Inspiration and the first time I encountered it, it was a real epiphany for me. I could not believe how you could go from the diagram view to the outline view with a simple click of the mouse. But more importantly Inspiration always allowed me the capability to brainstorm and get my ideas down in a way that was more consistent with my learning style and I have been using visual mapping tools ever since. To this day, Inspiration remains one of my favorite tools for brainstorming and concept mapping and now with the introduction of Webspiration it has expanded the utility of the tool for me.

Just this morning I learned that Webspiration will now allow you to publish your visual maps to a public area on the web with a click of the mouse and give you the embedded code to place your maps on your blog. When you log onto your account you will now be taken to the Document Manager which enables you to quickly view your documents. Here is a screen shot to the left of how to publish your visual maps.

Here is the embeded visual map from my Webspiration account:

just click on the map to zoom in and move around.

New Features in Webspiration

Here are some updates to Webspiration which I have previously written about. Webspiration is really maturing and is a wonderful online tool for visual thinkers. As a long time Inspiration user I am really excited by this version which is accessible to me anytime I am connected to the web. If you haven't taken the time-please do so you, will be very pleased with the features and the collaboration tools that are built-in to this application.

Learning Library

Inside the Launch Center we've built a learning library with helpful articles to strengthen your visual thinking skills. College users will find some great tips on how to write papers with the least pain possible, or how to use Webspiration to study more effectively. Business users can learn the essentials of brainstorming, read some quick tips for creating diagrams, or learn how outlining can streamline your business writing.

Help Center

Our new expanded Help Center is designed to get your questions answered quickly and provide access to the information you need to use Webspiration's functions to their fullest.

The new Frequently Asked Questions section answers the most common questions we get from users, and is a great place to start if you need some help. Also in the Help Center is the Getting Started Guide, which gives you a comprehensive overview of Webspiration.

And, of course, the Help Center provides you access to our friendly Webspiration Technical Support team, in case you need help with anything that wasn't covered in the FAQ's or Getting Started Guide.

Sample Gallery

Seeing how other people are using Webspiration can sometimes trigger some great ideas of your own. The new sample gallery has samples of many different uses for visual thinking, whether it's mapping out processes, organizing papers, or laying out web sites.

Mead Map Updated

I just received word that Mead Map has been updated, and in addition to real time collaboration, auto zoom for easy navigation and other innovative features, the online tool can now incorporate attachments. Users can attach pdfs, jpgs, Microsoft office documents and other files to their Mead Maps. This enhancement improves group collaboration, allowing teammates to quickly store and update all project resources in one centralized location without juggling USB drives, disks or CDs. One of the things that I really enjoy about Mead Map is its ease of use and the ability to publish your maps to the web so easily. I had a chance to try out the new version of Mead Map and was able to incorporate my attachments without a hitch. Being able to incorporate attachments is a key feature for using visual maps as an information repository. Mead Map gives each subsrcriber1 gigabyte of online storage for your files. CS Odessa Introduces ConceptDraw Office

CS Odessa Introduces ConceptDraw Office - The Integrated Solution for Effective Project Management Visualization and Communication

Odessa, Ukraine, June 17, 2008 - CS Odessa announces today the general availability of its new ConceptDraw Office business productivity software suite. ConceptDraw Office reflects CS Odessa's collective expertise in developing market leading business applications, data visualization technologies and project management tools.

Using CS Odessa's new InGyre Technology in its ConceptDraw Office business productivity applications (ConceptDraw MINDMAP, ConceptDraw PROJECT, and ConceptDraw PRO), users are provided with a seamlessly integrated workflow solution. The functionality of one stand-alone application is significantly extended, by utilizing the capabilities of the other applications within the suite, to create powerful work environments.

Building representative visual documentation that reflects work progress is a critical project task that ConceptDraw Office was developed to support. InGyre Technology assists in the creation of visual dashboards and reports that represent key indicators of work progress, from either project files or a set of selected tasks. It also quickly transforms task outlines into professional looking Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) charts that are editable by using ConceptDraw PRO.

From a communication standpoint, impressive visual project reporting is critical for the project success of any participant. ConceptDraw Office introduces a wide selection of tools to easily generate professional visual project reports.

Gregory Zhukov, Chief Executive Officer of CS Odessa explains, "We have seen from how our customers use currently available software products on the market, that there is a clear need for a visually-based application suite that has the capability to break through many of the business productivity barriers which have an adverse effect on project success. Years ago, Microsoft Office revolutionized the way we work with text documents and spreadsheets. In much the same way, ConceptDraw Office revolutionizes the way we work with project management data and business information."

Gregory Zhukov, further states, "With the time and other resource constraints that face knowledge workers today, it is important that the tools they use closely fit the tasks at hand. With CS Odessa's forward thinking design of CD Office, knowledge workers can now focus on accomplishments without struggling with the tools they use."

A common customer usage scenario often begins with the brainstorming of project ideas, using whiteboard views and organizing results into highly informative mind maps. During the next phase, information is developed into detailed project plans with Gantt charts and visual performance dashboards. Managers can then balance and efficiently allocate resource loads using the Resource Usage view, or assign and send task lists to team participants in the form of mind maps. ConceptDraw Office provides start to finish process and project cycle management.
