Year of the Pig = Difficult year for Tigers

Back in May I set myself the task of finishing 24 sketchbooks by the end of the year. Today I finally met that goal. While I think the quantity of pages I produced out numbered the quality of work, it has been the sheer force of will and the habit of drawing everyday that have helped me overcome many of the challenges that 2007 presented.

Next year I will be pursuing honours, ‘crossing over’ from Design into Fine Art, and will be majoring in Drawing. I am looking forward to the challenge and the change of a new environment, new peers, and the opportunity to develop my ‘powers’ as an artist.

I also have some exciting plans in store for 2008 that I am looking forward to sharing throughout the year. In fact, this is likely to be my last update until February 2008 as in January I will be traveling to Sydney to attend a series of workshops at the Julian Ashton School of Art.

Thanks again to everyone who has checked this blog more than once and to those who have left a comment.

Cheers.

Soul Journeys

These dusk jacket designs were for a book series entitled 'Soul Journeys'. Part of the challenge of this assignment was to overcome my tendency to refine thumbnail sketches by using the sketches as the final illustrations.

Cryptids

These were for a 'mapping' assignment. I created a poster that depicted 11 cryptids and their locations around the world. Cryptids are legendary creatures that are thought to exist but for which scientific proof is still missing. It was a lot of fun reading all of the descriptions of these creatures and then creating my own interpretations!
